Ich habe den Liebster bekommen!

Comments 29 Standard

About a month ago, I was nominated for what’s known as the Liebster Award by three members of my new blogging circle (Halfa1000MilesCaledonAcres, and Still Not a Journal.) It’s an online blogging award presented to one blogger from another. It’s awarded to newer bloggers who the nominator finds worthy of recognition. It helps build community and helps fellow bloggers (and their subscribers/followers) find new content.

(FYI–I just ripped that whole description off of Half a 1000 Miles page, and I hope that’s okay? I think it’s the description that goes along with the award title, right?)

Anyway, this is awesome, and I’m really thankful to say the least! I started this blog mostly to get back in the habit of writing, find my ‘voice,’ and try to improve, etc. I know this sounds weird–but I didn’t really expect anyone outside of my family or a few friends to read it.  Mostly I just wanted a pretty internet page to decorate and file my writing on. 🙂

But, in the past three months I’ve really gotten to experience the benefits of blogging.  I’ve been introduced to blogs kept by the most talented of writers, photographers, illustrators and thinkers. I feel like I have this new community and a creative outlet, to boot.  I love it! 🙂

So, when nominated, you:

  • Thank the nominator and link back to them.
  • Answer the questions they provided.
  • List 11 random facts about yourself.
  • Nominate 5-11 blogs of your choosing that you think deserve recognition.

List 11 questions to ask your nominees.

If one day your blog took off, and merely by mentioning and recommending someone else’s blog, they too could become famous, what blogs would you “bring up the elevator” with you? (I have already thought about this and know my answers, ha).

Not to cop out of this answer, but I would probably ask to bring up all of the people I recommend at the end of this Liebster Award questionnaire! They’re all so incredibly good. But, if I had to choose just one I’d go with Half A Thousand Miles. Her posts are hilarious! She has the best, most authentic ‘voice’ and insanely funny graphics to match her stories. I just think she’s a total star.

What do you wish your non-bloggy friends knew about blogging?

I must admit, I’m still getting a sense of what blogging is all about! I only became ‘bloggy’ very recently. But, the more I explore it, the more in love I am with the sheer variety of what’s out there. And, exploring one blog leads you to another blog which leads you to another blog…it’s endless (and awesome.)

What is your favorite TV show of all time?

I have two, and they couldn’t be more different! I’m a total Game of Thrones freak, which isn’t my typical genre. I usually avoid all things dragons and medieval porn.  But, my husband forced me to watch one episode and I was HOOKED.  Also, I can’t get enough of The Bachelor franchise. I’m seriously addicted to those shows. It’s sick. If people watch it with me, they aren’t allowed to talk unless it’s a commercial break. And even then they can’t talk too much in case the show comes back on and they’re mid-sentence.

What is your own personal favorite of your own blog posts, and why?

I had the most FUN writing ‘Visa Baseball.’ I wasn’t self -conscious at all and just let myself go—laughing and cringing at the experiences as I went along. A lot of times I stress out too much about my writing or over-think things. But, that post was a time when I just really enjoyed every second of being creative, and that doesn’t always happen.

Rate these in order of what you don’t have enough of right now: Sleep, Peace, Money, Time, Love.

I’ll go from what I have the most of, to what I have the least of (that’s the order we’re supposed to go in, right?) Love, Peace, Money, Sleep, Time. I have an eleven-month old daughter, so time and sleep are tough to come by these days. I do my writing while she naps (sometimes I get 30 minutes, and other times I get two hours.) She tends to take a short nap when I’m feeling ESPECIALLY inspired to write, of course.

What was the hardest part about your first year of blogging?

I’ve been doing it for three months and I think the hardest part is finding my voice, and also having the confidence to post. When I first started, I felt so excited about getting back to writing and just wanted to post, post, post. Now I’m more aware that (a few) people are actually reading this, so I put a lot more pressure on myself. I’m taking it (and myself) much more seriously, which is both a good and a bad thing.

The other hard part is finding time. Sometimes my daughter doesn’t nap, or I have things to get done while she naps. And, once she goes to bed for the night I don’t have it in me to do much more than scroll through Facebook or stare at the TV and not actually process anything that’s happening on the screen.

I am all about bloggers helping other bloggers. Help us help you. If someone wanted to show your blog some love, what would be your preferred method — a Facebook share? Sharing on Twitter? Subscribing to your blog? Commenting on your blog? Submitting your posts to Stumbleupon? Or something else? Let’s all read their answers and try to make that happen.

Oh, man, I don’t know. Any one of those things would be good, obviously, but what I love more than anything are comments. I post something and then definitely check in, oh, every ten minutes or so to see if I have any likes or comments. So, those are definitely appreciated!

What was the most enjoyable job you’ve ever had?

Dressing up as a giant rat and dancing at birthday parties when I was 16 was certainly fun, but the MOST enjoyable job has been teaching at an international school. The kids are amazing, the curriculum is interesting, and I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be.

You have 3 months with the money and time to do WHAT EVER you like. What would you do?

I would most definitely travel! It’s hard to say where I’d go, because there are so many places I want to see. But, New Zealand would be on the list…Japan…Iceland…Thailand…Africa…I’d just see as much as I could in that three months.

What is your favorite food and where is it done the best?

I can’t get enough sushi and, I swear—the very best I’ve had is in Buffalo, New York at Fuji Grill. I realize that fresh, sushi grade fish is not to be found in the area, so it’s not a likely place for amazing sushi…but I haven’t tasted anything like it. I’ve also never been to Japan, so that’s the best I’ve got at the moment.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

When I first tried to get a job in Germany I packed some suitcases, bought a flight, and left! I stayed with friends and even in a hotel until I was gainfully employed. It was definitely intense! And then I did it all over again when I wanted to work in London. I even slept on a friend’s dorm room floor. He wasn’t allowed to have people staying there, so I had to be snuck in and out. One weekend he went away, so I had to stay inside the building the whole time and try to be as inconspicuous as possible. It was stressful and made me feel claustrophobic. But, in both cases I got a job. Whew!

ELEVEN RANDOM FACTS ABOUT ME

  • I have a phobia of rats and every animal that reminds me of a rat (to include mice, squirrels, seals, short-haired dogs, hamsters, etc.)
  • When I was a kid, I used to train moths to sit on my finger for long periods of time. I thought it was cool.
  • I’m obsessed with Coffee Mate (the powder creamer.) I go through a giant tub of it in a very short amount of time. It’s rather gross. But, otherwise I’m a relatively healthy eater.
  • I joined Twitter for the sole purpose of following ex-bachelor contestants. This is just one more reason why I can’t watch too much TV. I go ALL IN and have to watch cast interviews, read their tweets, etc. etc. TV isn’t just TV. It’s a lifestyle.
  • My favorite breakfast is dry Quaker oats in a bowl.
  • Apparently I laugh and snort in my sleep. So attractive.
  • My daughter looks exactly like I did when I was her age (11 months old.) I’m talking clone-level—it’s actually creepy to see pictures of us side by side.
  • Freddy Kreuger scares me more than I can put in to words. Last Halloween my husband and I tried to watch Nightmare on Elm Street and I lasted all of fifteen minutes before I was so freaked out we had to turn it off.
  • For the longest time I thought BTW stood for ‘Back to Whatever.’
  • My family owns a haunted house in Springville, NY. It’s actually featured in a book called Haunted Places of Western New York. The man who built the property (the first in Springville) was a Civil War veteran. One day he left for New York City with a huge sum of money and was murdered there. It’s believed his daughters watch for him out of a tower attached to the house.
  • Part of why I write is because I have a total fear of getting old and forgetting everything that has ever happened to me. It’s literally something that I think about a lot.

As I said, I’m new to blogging and am still in the process of discovering and following blogs. So, for the moment I’ll just keep it simple and point out just a few that have been entertaining me these days. Some already have Liebster Awards, but I couldn’t pass over them in this list. Consider yourselves Liebsters to the MAX! If you’re up for answering my questions, please do! (But, no pressure.)

HalfAThousandMiles—As she said in her Liebster Award post, I can’t remember exactly how we met. I think I may have seen a comment she wrote for someone, was intrigued by her blog name, and went there? I’m not sure. Great, now I sound like a stalker. Anyway, her blog is absolutely hilarious. I’m not really a ‘laugh out loud’ type of person. (It’s not that I don’t have a sense of humor, but I’m more a smile and nod type of gal.) But, this blog does me in. The writer lives in a small town and blogs about everything from flinging poo to that one time she drove her truck into the ocean. Something I really want to gain from this whole blogging experience is a sense of my own writing voice. Well, she has this nailed. I feel like I know the writer of this blog, even though we’ve never met. I admire her style so much.

FreeThinkersAnonymous—This is another favorite of mine. The writer is obviously smart, writes well, and has this awesome dry sense of humor. He tackles all kinds of topics, like octopuses, graffiti, cancer, poetry, pop quizzes, the origins of words and spinach bread. There’s a little bit of everything on this site, and it’s always fresh and interesting! As soon as a new post comes out, I stop what I’m doing and read. His is another style that I admire. I tend to write very long posts—it’s just what I do. He’s able to pack such a punch in a relatively shorter space. I think I can learn from him.

Caledon Acres and Sand in the Bikini—This writer has TWO blogs, which goes to show just how varied her experiences are. She’s originally from Romania, lives on a farm, is crafty, and covers a variety of topics from strange dreams to life with chickens. In addition to having an interesting blog, something about her that impresses me are the comments she leaves on other blogs. She genuinely takes the time to read other people’s posts and leave thoughtful comments about what she reads. I always get the feeling that she truly took time to think about other people’s writing, and that’s so neat! She’s a very encouraging and upbeat person.

StillNotAJournal—This blog has so much going on. I love it! The writer is a talented photographer. I particularly enjoy posts about her travels because she has a real eye for everything from action shots of her children to the quirky details (like giant chickens crossing a road) that make travel so fun. She has an excellent sense of humor. And, she also covers a variety of topics. Everything from books to crappy selfies and embarrassing experiences can be found here. Blogs are really a space to make your own. When I visit this writer’s site, I really feel like I am entering her world and getting a sense of everything from the personal stories to the images that make this writer who she is.

SilenceKilledTheDinosaursI literally just discovered this one last week (from the FreethinkersAnonymous blogroll) and am literally blown away by the sheer talent of the blogger. First of all, how could you not rush to check out a blog with a name as cool as this? Then you get there just to find someone who not only writes in a way that’s engaging, funny, and enlightening—she draws, too. The effect is awesome. Her topics include living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, dinosaurs, funny stories, serious stories, and everything in between. I wish so much that I could draw like she can and that my blog could look like that, too. I sort of want to bundle up her blog, stick it in my backpack and run away with it.

NorwayTimesI found this blog while searching for other expats and was immediately impressed. The writer shares humorous, fascinating details about trying to settle in to life in Norway with her husband. Something I’m especially appreciative of is the fact that, like me, she often writes posts that are 2,000+ words. I love settling in to a detailed piece of writing, and this blog is so interesting that I always wish the posts were even longer. I’ve never been to Norway, and my interest is definitely piqued. I definitely feel like I can relate to this author’s experiences, even if we’re in different countries, speaking different languages, and dealing with different cultural nuances.

EverythingButTheKitchenSinkThis blog is one of the first that I clicked ‘follow’ on, and I’m so glad I did. The writer posts beautifully written musings on what it’s like to live and cope with anxiety (I can definitely relate to that!) Her blog also features creative writing, and thoughts on life abroad. She is a thoughtful, introspective, and honest person. Reading her blog posts are like getting a glimpse into her soul—and that’s what blogging really seems to be about.

  1. I totally wrote that description, but you are welcome to it 🙂

Thanks for the shout out(s). You have rocked so hard since the day we “met”. I will certainly check out your other bloggy noms.

You go, Bachelor Girl. I love that shiz. I love it so much I know that the Bachelorette begins May 23. Yay! I have also commented on former contestant’s tweets.

I have been totally covered up lately. I am starting a Blogging Meetup in my town, alongside someone I haven’t met yet, and I handle my neighborhood subdivision’s Facebook page (and my family’s), and I raised my hand to volunteer for stuff at work and my husband inexplicably bought Amy Schumer tickets for this Friday (One time I said she reminded me of me. I never said I particularly liked her), and there is a huge plant sale this Saturday in my hometown and the Hub is geeking out so hard about it. (Ha. I am answering some of the questions in the total wrong place).

Love your blog and you. You’re my favoritest homie

    • Oops about the description! So, if I ever start writing a post about that time I drove my truck in to the ocean, and wonder where it came from, we’ll know…:-))) Thanks for letting me borrow it, though! It sounds like you are BUSY! I’m intrigued about the Blogging Meetup! What exactly will you all be doing? I’m jealous! I want to join! It’s funny. Germans are so private that I don’t even know anyone in our town, let alone think I could ever start up a blogging meet up with them. Amy Schumer should be fun and, without even knowing you in person, I can absolutely imagine that you’re similar. You’re lucky to be compared to someone so cool! The only person I’ve ever thought I resembled was Richard Simmons (back when I had very short, very curly hair.) Anyway, how are you doing all of this and still writing such funny blogs to boot? My daughter just woke up so I have to run but I love your blog and love you, too! You’re MY favorites homie, too, and I’m so glad that we’ve connected!!! You. Are. Awesome!!! Like I said, I really just started a blog to have somewhere to decorate and do my writing exercises. I didn’t really think I’d meet incredible people like yours truly, too! You definitely inspire me!

      • I’ll let you know how the Meetup goes. If you look at meetup.com for any city of my size, there are multiple blogging groups to choose from. My town has one, and it’s only for WordPress customization, etc. I don’t need another thing to head up, but this one….I will. Dagnabbit. I’m supposed to be all empty-nesting and chilling and stuff 🙂

        Liked by 2 people

      • Yes definitely do let me know how it goes! That’s so neat. I’ll have to check if anything like that goes on in Heidelberg. I’m sure there are German bloggers, here, too. 🙂 I would love to be in that group with you. On one hand, I feel like I can navigate Word Press–but on the other hand there’s things I’d like to do and have no idea how to go about it. 🙂 Your site looks AWESOME. If anyone should head something like that, it’s you! P.S. I felt kind of guilty getting rid of that one picture that you liked on my page. But, I saw this mural in the suburb I live in and had to take a picture and use it. The U.S. military was here forever (I used to teach for the military schools, actually) and after they left the mural was painted. It just kind of captures the whole American/German connection. 🙂

      • It’s so funny. I went to fiverr to see what they would charge me to make a few changes on my site. I can study up on it all day and make the changes myself, but figured if someone else would do it for cheap, I would pay them (upgrade to the paid version of my current theme, change margins a little, set up my backups). The guy comes back and tells me how unprofessional my site looks, and sends me links of sites I might like. Um….not what I asked for at all.

I answered back and told him that while there were aspects on the sites he sent me that I really liked, there were things I liked better on the one I already had. I also told him my site probably didn’t look professional because I was not a professional site builder. I just found the whole exchange to be hilarious. He also wanted to charge me $120.

      • What?? That’s crazy! How rude and totally uncalled for! This guy obviously has a higher opinion of himself than he should. Your site looks fantastic and VERY professional looking. I can’t imagine what standards this person was trying to hold you to. I’m impressed by how every last aspect of your site–from the fonts to the images and even the theme you chose–really ‘fit’ your voice and what you do in your blog. Don’t pay 120 and don’t listen! Yuck! P.S. If you ever want to see unprofessional-looking, you should see some of the Powerpoints or worksheets I try to create for my students at the international school. We laugh at them a lot. My intentions are always good. The product…well….it could be better. 🙂

  2. Welcome to the world of blogging. It’s hard to believe you’ve only been doing this three months. I think you’ve created your own distinctive style and voice and certainly carved out your own special niche, something it takes some people years to do.
Anyway your blog is your special place. It’s very nice of you to open it up so any yutz can wander in, but we, your guests, still have a responsibility to treat your place with respect. We need to be courteous and not put our feet up on the coffee table or use inappropriate words like “semprini” or “yutz”.
Your addiction to The Bachelor and Game Of Thrones reminds me of a rant I once heard someone else go on about the expression “guilty pleasure”. He said–I’m paraphrasing–if something gives you pleasure and doesn’t hurt anyone else don’t feel guilty about it.
I’m just sayin’ that in case you ever feel inclined to describe those shows as “guilty pleasures”.
Anyway I’m honored to be mentioned even though I’ve already done my Liebster post, but if you don’t mind I’ll answer one of your questions:

“If we met you in real life, what would be different than how you’re portrayed in your blog?”

I would probably come across as very shy and quiet. It can be difficult for me to talk to people I don’t know, even if I know them well from the internet. But once I warm up it’s hard to shut me up which wouldn’t be a surprise.

    Liked by 2 people

    • I love the words yutz and semprini! The second one sounds like a tropical drink with a little umbrella in it. Anyway, that’s interesting what you said about it being difficult to talk to people you don’t know (and then warming up, eventually.) Are you an introvert? I am, too. It was something that always bothered me until I read the book ‘Quiet’ by…someone that I am too lazy to literally open up a new tab and look up. But, it’s all about the power of introverts and it really made me embrace my nature and know that both introverts and extroverts evolved, so there’s a need for both in this crazy animal kingdom. 🙂 I used to be more than just introverted–I was SHY in all caps. But, expat life has changed that because there’s always this extra special need to build community, somehow. Now no one believes I ever could have been an introvert. Anyway, I’m digressing. Thanks for the guilty pleasure paraphrase! I like it and I totally agree. I’m less embarrassed by my Game of Thrones addiction than my Bachelor one. (Probably because the Bachelor is the more intense obsession of the two.) Honestly, I don’t watch a lot of TV. We have British TV (though we live in Germany…) and there’s never much on there that I’d be interested in watching aside from BBC News and the odd soccer game. Thanks for what you said about finding my niche! I’m trying. It’s weird–at first I went in purely convinced I was going to write for myself, don’t want an audience, necessarily, and just want to have FUN. Now I must admit there is that itch to build up an audience a bit…but it’s also making me overthink everything more than I should be. To be honest, I’m feeling blocked this week. Ever have that happen?

  3. WOW so sweet as always!!! I saw myself standing out of the crowd with two sites, but you guys totally inspired me to get out of my little shell and backyard and write whatever and whenever without putting too much thought into it and see what comes of it 🙂 so I actually thank you for doing what you do and being an inspiration for the insecure little bloggers like me.

so you laugh and snort in your sleep?? I tend to laugh and snort in public hahaha then cry a little…

sorry, you won’t have me over for The Bachelorette… I won’t even call you during that time slot lol I watched the first season with Trista and loved it!! None of the other ones I watched even came close, so I gave up lol

That’s so cool about the Haunted House!! I love to watch horror movies and then get nightmares (of course)… I went through the Haunted House at Niagara Falls my side and I was scared out of my mind! but absolutely LOVED it too lol

“Part of why I write is because I have a total fear of getting old and forgetting everything that has ever happened to me.” — this should be an encouragement for everyone with a pencil or any other writing device, and I am sure Michelle (@ Still not a journal) would agree 🙂

You totally deserve the award!! 🙂

    Liked by 3 people

    • YOU are the sweet one! Laughing without snorting along to it isn’t any fun. I highly encourage doing both as much as possible! 🙂 I know exactly what haunted house in Canada that you’re talking about! I went to it once and it absolutely freaked me out!! If I remember correctly, wasn’t there one room where it looks like a car is about to run you over? Or am I imagining it? Funny enough, I think Trista’s season was the only one I never watched! I think I came in to the show right after that. 🙂 It really is a ridiculous show. Every single season is so similar in terms of what they say, what happens in each episode, etc. But it still pulls me in. I’ll let you watch the Bachelorette with me some time, but if you talk I may have to give you the boot! 🙂 Just kidding. It’s so neat how we all inspire and motivate each other. I really thought that MAYBE a couple friends would read this, but never thought I’d make new writing comrades/friends/blogger support systems and that is the best part of this whole thing so far. 🙂 YOU totally deserve the award, too, and I meant what I said about your awesome comments. I feel like I’m a bit lax with that, sometimes, just because with Laken my time is so limited. But, I do what I can and I’m sure the older she gets the more involved in this world of blogging I’ll be.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Ya, that’s the one!! (haunted house). How you feel about The Bachelorette, I feel about Survivor lol and The Amazing Race. You WILL give me the boot because I like to make “smart” remarks during these type of shows… I yell at the contestants from my couch lol BUT, no talking during movies! breaks up the concentration hahahaha

When I started Caledon Acres I knew it will only be me and a handful of friends/family (my sister only subscribed to show her support), then The Bloggess came along and I met a couple of you ladies, then the award really made me expand my views lol and I added more people under “to stalk”… Sand in the bikini seems to be taking off nicely with being UNDER A MONTH OLD…I blame the wordpress.com and people finding it on the Reader (which I just found out about it not too long ago too). I was telling Mitchell, I wrote 3 posts in one day, to kind of get it started and already had 1-2 likes THAT SAME DAY! I don’t know if you ever played Warcraft or heard of it, an online game of strategy where you need to do certain things and expand your “map” (I haven’t played it much and it was YEARS ago), but anyway, I feel like that…like I was in the dark doing my own thing and now my map is expanding, lights are turned on for different areas of the world, literally! The virtual world is an interesting place to be part of for sure…

  4. Sarah!!! I just read this post and felt bad when I saw how much you love comments! If I knew that you felt that way I would have been commenting on every post!!! (You know I am going to have to go back an reread everything so that I can comment on every single one now!). I love you so much and I LOVE that you have found this amazing creative outlet. I remember the notebook after notebook after notebook of journals you used to keep and occasionally you would have me read an entry. I always wanted SO BADLY for you to just hand them to me and let me read all of it. You say you are searching for your “voice” through this process and that is so shocking to me because I feel like you have had your unique voice since you were a kid and it only continues to evolve WITH you as you grow and change through life. I can’t wait to continue watching you grow and develop this amazing outlet.

      • She is a total keeper for sure! There aren’t a lot of Jodi’s in the world. This girl has five kids, two jobs, and still goes above and beyond the call of friendship in every way possible. Everyone needs a Jodi in their pocket. 🙂

    • Jodes, you’re so cute!!! I love you so much, too, and please don’t worry about leaving me comments at all! (Though it’s super sweet that you’re concerned about it.) I can’t believe that you-with five kids and multiple jobs–even take the time to read my blog. PLEASE do not feel pressured to ever do that, you hear me!! And thanks for what you said about my ‘voice.’ I guess my ultimate goal is to finally devote time to writing. I always say that I love to write, but then go years without doing it. I devote so much time to things like The Bachelor…why not something just a bit more important to me? As for comments, sure, I love them but I also understand why people don’t leave them. I’ve been reading my friend Charlotte’s blog for years and only started commenting recently! I enjoy her writing, always have, but just never thought to comment. I can see by my stats that people are reading this (I mean, not a huge number, but more than I expected going in to this.) I tend to talk to people face to face or through private emails about my blog more than through comments. Though, they’ve really been great in helping me develop some new friendships with other bloggers! Sorry I’m also rambly. We just got back from visiting Delaney in Ansbach and I passed out in the car, so now I’m all loopy. I love you dear friend–and just an FYI I left you a Whatsapp voice mail last week sometime. Just wanted to make sure you saw it! One of these upcoming weekend I’ll give you an actual phone call in real time! Xoxox

  5. Hi Schnitty! You have been busy haven’t you? I have everyone’s posts to catch up on and yours is the first! And Laura started another blog? Oh jeez I must get right on that too. You guys are prolific to say the least! 🙂
I love these Liebster posts; so informative! And thanks for saying such nice things about me, and finding all these fab blogs to check out… I need a TARDIS to keep up with all the reading I want to do.
Ok some of my answers to your questions are in my Liebster post so I’ll cherry pick the new ones:
What is your ultimate blogging goal? Why are you doing this?
I blog for a few reasons; tell Mum and my sister about what we’re up to, meet lovely peeps such as yourself who ‘get’ my obsession, to practise writing, show people the beauty of my corner of the world, you know. but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t dream of one day writing a real book. How awesome that would be!
What is some of the best advice you’ve ever been given?
I first saw it on The Bloggess’ website; “Don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20.” Or even, to stop comparing myself to others, period, because I tend to do that and then get a bit down about it. I just try to focus on trying to be better than I was before.
If we met you in real life, what would be different than how you’re portrayed in your blog?
Pretty much the same I think, though hopefully slightly better looking than I was in that gross selfies post! Lol
What has been one major turning point in your life so far?
Deciding to move to Queensland. Nearly everything has come from that; husband, kids, new career, mental health, fitness and a feeling of knowing where I belong.
What is your least favorite blog post that you’ve written so far? What about it bothers you?
My fave one is in my Liebster post. My LEAST favourite one doesn’t actually exist any more because I deleted it! It was one about a song called ‘Earthquake’ and how I kept hearing the lyrics wrong, but it was hilarious to me because what I DID hear made me think he was singing about explosive diarrhoea. I called the post ‘Fartquake’. I still think it’s funny whenever I hear the song but I deleted it because it just wasn’t true to how I wanted to write on the blog. I love toilet humour, don’t get me wrong, but the whole post just didn’t ‘feel’ right.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a blog?
Just start. It’s one of those things where you learn most while doing it.
How are you most likely to spend the weekend?
Today: catching up on over a week’s worth of blog posts and comments! Tomorrow: there’s a family street party down in our ‘local’, Mudgeeraba that we’ll take the boys to, and tomorrow night hopefully a date movie with the hubby!

I’m with Christopher in being simply amazed that you’ve only been doing this for a few months. And I’m frankly in awe at your output, especially having a little one to wrangle! You’re my hero 🙂

    • You are such a sweetheart. Thank you for such awesome comments!! Honestly, I had no idea how much I’d get out of blogging. Like you, I started it as a way to keep people informed about what was going on and to have a platform for writing (the one skill in life I want to devote myself to.) I really didn’t expect to come into contact with people like you, or Christopher, Laura, or Linda! And, I am SO thankful for that! I just know that we’re going to be reading each other’s writing for a long, long time, and I love that! So, you mentioned that you’d like to write a book? Any idea what you might want to write about? Have you started one? Fiction/nonfiction? I hear you on that end. I’ve always felt that the greatest accomplishment I could imagine would be to publish books. I’ve started things in the past, but just couldn’t quite find the ‘right’ genre for me? A novel I started fell flat, and then I realized I really, really, really like creative nonfiction. But, when I wrote about certain things that should have been funny, I was way too serious. The voice just wasn’t right for the material, if that makes sense. Anyway, so that’s why I started the blog. To keep practicing and write in the way that feels most fun/real/comfortable/ME and then see where I can move forward with that. I have to ask, what is a Mudgeeraba? And, I’m definitely jealous of the date night! Todd and I are a bit behind in terms of hiring a babysitter and going out for once! I don’t know what our problem is! Thanks for what you said about my output! Haha originally I planned to post twice a week and now I realize that’s pretty unlikely. If my posts were shorter, maybe, but at the moment I’m definitely feeling the pressure to get one out a week! (In a good way, though. Pressure is good.) 🙂 You are my hero, too! I’m so impressed by your writing!! Even your COMMENTS are so open and honest and well written. I am enjoying this group of ours SO MUCH! Anyway, you WILL write a book. I’m sure of it…and it’s going to be great and I’m going to want a signed copy and bragging rights to tell people that I know you personally! 🙂

      • It’s funny, I always saw myself as incapable of writing fiction but I actually had a crack at some FanFiction last year and really enjoyed it. And it wasn’t really much different to the creative non-fiction I’ve been writing for years! but as to what kind of book I want to write…? Well, if I knew that I would’ve written it already! I adore the travel writing style of Bill Bryson and would love to write a travel memoir, but maybe as a photobook because while details and good writing can evoke a place you can’t beat good photos and that visual element. And thanks so much for the encouragement; sometimes I feel ‘nah no way, I couldn’t do that’ and other days I’m like ‘I can TOTALLY do that, and I totally will.’ It’s still in the thinky phase though… Rest assured when (?) it happens you’ll get a signed copy with an essay of thanks scrawled inside!
Haha “what is a Mudgeeraba?” – It’s a town! 🙂 Pronounced “Mudjruh-bah”. Well, a village/suburb/old town which has now been enveloped by the city of the ‘Gold Coast’. We consider it our local and go there for shopping, eating out, and stuff like that, though we visit other places around the Coast as well. Mudgy has a lovely small country town feel and we feel part of the community there – we use the tennis club, Finn plays junior AFL with the Mudgeeraba Spartans (there’s a post coming there eventually!!) and we go to as many events as we can.

  6. Also, I thought I’d read wrong but you said a really fun job was dressing up as a giant rat for birthday parties then you also say you have a massive rat phobia! Which came first? :O
And just as a heads up, I’m coincidentally going to be publishing a post about rats soon, just in case you need to avoid it. I won’t be offended! But now I’m worried I need to include a trigger warning! It’s going to be called “Raisins or Ratshit” which is actually a movie reference – ‘The Fisher King’.

    • Thanks for the head’s up! Hmm, it depends. If there are pictures of rats, then I’ll probably be too freaked out to read it (I know, what a BOOB.) But, I think I can handle the story, alone. It’s so ridiculous. And, yes, the phobia came first which made it pretty ironic that my first job was to dress up as a giant rat. Are you familiar with Chuck E. Cheeses? (I’m not sure if that’s just an American chain?) Anyway, it’s THE place to have birthday parties because the pizza’s amazing, there are video games, and you win tickets which, in turn, earn you prizes. It’s a seven year old’s utopia! Definitely a fun place to work and it gave me lots of stories. I definitely got my ass kicked a few times by preteens! (Oh and then there was the time this kid’s prosthetic eyeball fell out in the ball crawl…where at least ten other kids were jumping and throwing things…)

      • I have one photo, but you can’t actually see the rat, only the tail, but I can put in a massive warning and you can quickly scroll past it? Lol. Sorry for loling tho. 🙂 And I have heard of ‘Chucky Cheese’… I assume that’s the rat’s name then? I’d never thought about it. A RAT as the mascot for a fast food chain? Wtf? And an eyeball in the ball pit – sounds like the opening of a horror movie! 😀

      • OH my goodness! I love you even more now!!! I was in my teens and still liked the Chuck E Cheese!! My sister called it CHUNKY Cheese for the longest time! she said the cheese makes you chunky so Chunky Cheese LMAO 7 year old’s Utopia my foot! I was 17-18-19 when we went 😀

uuummmm….how did the story with the prosthetic eye end? I’m expecting something along the lines “somone had to empty the ball pit, one ball at a time, until they found the right ball!!” hahahahahha

PS. are you celebrating a ‘second’ Easter today? 🙂 Is Germany mostly Catholic? or Orthodox too? (I actually have no clue)

      • I’m so sorry for my delayed reply! This week has been SO busy! Laken is always going, going, going, so time to just sit down and be on the internet is relatively rare. Anyway, I’m so glad you know Chuck E. Cheese! 🙂 It was QUITE the job. I’ll tell you this–the police were often called in due to fighting parents or rowdy teenagers. The drama was always in full effect! As for the prosthetic eye, you’re exactly right. They emptied out the ball crawl and found that eye. It wasn’t harmed!!! 🙂 As for ‘second’ Easter, I didn’t really celebrate although everyone else seemed to be! Germany is mostly Catholic, so it was definitely going on today. Lots of people were out riding bikes. I don’t know if that was just because the weather was nice, or if it’s a tradition! 🙂

  7. Thank you for the nomination! And for all the crazy-nice compliments! I blushed. Really.

Do you mind if I answer your questions here? See, I’ve done some of these awards before, but I’ve just recently made a decision not to do them in the future. I’d still love to do your questions though!

What, for you, is the hardest part about blogging?

I have problems with social anxiety, so for me the hardest part is getting past that. When I first started I found this very challenging. I tended to have a big stress-out every time I posted something, and it took a long time for me to work up to commenting on other people’s blogs. But I gradually got more comfortable with the whole process and it doesn’t cause me too much trouble these days.

What is your ultimate blogging goal? Why are you doing this?

It started as a whim. It isn’t now.

I’m currently shifting toward having my work and my site be a little more professional. (Posting more regularly, putting in my best effort with the comics, a bit of tidying up of the site itself). I’m looking into setting up a Patreon. So I guess my ultimate goal is to be a professional writer/illustrator and make some kind of income off it.

How would you describe your writing ‘voice’ and style?

… I don’t really know. My humour is a mix of dry and zany, but I try to give it heart too. But those things seem kind of contradictory.

What is some of the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Do it your way. I heard this from a few wonderful, wonderful friends in regards to planning a wedding. It was excellent wedding advice, but it’s also excellent life advice and can be applied to pretty much anything.

If we met you in real life, what would be different than how you’re portrayed in your blog?

I’m not sure I’m ‘different’, but there’s a different focus. My blog isn’t a chronicle of my life so much as a place to publish stories and comics inspired by my life. I do think my blog is an accurate portrayal of the things I do and how I think (in a hyper-real rather than true-to-life sense of accurate, anyway), but I don’t write or draw about everything. And sometimes real-life me isn’t amusing or entertaining. Sometimes she’s just doing laundry. Sometimes she’s listening to other people instead of doing all the talking herself. Sometimes she’s just being quiet and thinking.

Oh, also I swear quite a bit in real life but don’t in my blog. This is because writing swearing feels different (much, much harsher) than talking swearing. I don’t really write-swear even in real life and that has carried over to blog-me because she only communicates through writing and drawing.

What has been one major turning point in your life so far?

I got sick in 2014. Not life-threatening sick, but still bad sick. Can’t leave the house sick. Forced to give up most of your plans sick. Unable to be financially independent or even house-work independent sick.

I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia and learned these are unpredictable illnesses that can last anything from a few weeks to your entire life. For the first few months I assumed I would start to recover any day. After a year I knew that it couldn’t last much longer. But after a year and a half everything seemed hopeless. It felt like the world had ended for me.

But I kept waking up the next day. I kept existing. I kept writing (less and less the sicker I got, but I didn’t stop). And I realised that the world hadn’t ended after all. The plans I had when I was healthy might no longer be possible for me, but I could make different ones. The lives other people live might never be open to me, but my life still would be.

So I made new plans. Some of them were for my blog and my writing.

What is your favorite blog post that you’ve written? Why?

It’s still Bear Attacks and Other Nightmares (https://silencekilledthedinosaurs.com/2014/04/01/bear-attacks-and-other-nightmares/). I wrote it years ago now. It was actually the second post to go up on my site. My art style has evolved a lot since then, my writing too. I think I’m funnier and lighter now, and I’m much better at keeping posts a readable length. But I still just like it. I like the idea that you need someone who will just say ok without hesitation. And I like the bear picture (so much so that I’ve recently redrawn it in my current art style because you just never know when you’ll need a cartoon of yourself getting ripped apart by a bear in your up-to-date art style).

What is your least favorite blog post that you’ve written so far? What about it bothers you?

Well … technically any post that is a response to an award nomination. Which is why I’ve decided to stop doing them. Sorry again.

But if you don’t count those it’s either How To Tell If Someone Is Actually A Soulless Demon-Spawn Waiting For An Opportunity To Feed On Your Flesh (https://silencekilledthedinosaurs.com/2014/05/19/how-to-tell-if-someone-is-actually-a-soulless-demon-spawn-waiting-for-an-opportunity-to-feed-on-your-flesh/) or Foibles (Little Crazy Things) (https://silencekilledthedinosaurs.com/2015/04/21/foibles-little-crazy-things/).

The demon one … I was never quite sure about somehow, but I showed it to some friends and they said it was great and I would be a fool not to put it up. And … I don’t know. There’s still something about it that’s not quite right to me. I think what I dislike about it the most is that it is two years old and it still pulls the most search-engine hits somehow. Apparently demons are a popular search topic? So maybe it’s just me being petty because I think other posts deserve the attention this one seems to get.

The Foibles one … okay, I was actually pretty pleased with this one before it went up. But then it absolutely BOMBED. Probably my worst performing post of all time. But I still kind of liked it, and I guess it was weird but I still never understood why it did so badly. So now I have this uncomfortable emotional reaction to it that’s a mix of shame and pride and defensiveness.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting a blog?

Enjoy yourself. And interact with other bloggers; it’s the best bit.

How are you most likely to spend the weekend?

Even though don’t have a proper job I try to treat the week days as get-stuff-done days and weekends as have-a-break time. So I try not to do blog things and instead spend time with my partner.

What is your favorite book, and why?

Okay, so. Here’s the thing. I read a lot. A LOT. But I’m awful at favourites. I just can’t do it. I like all sorts of things in different ways, and I have no idea how to distil that into a single favourite.

I can KIND OF pick out a favourite author (Terry Pratchett) because I’ve been reading him since I was 13 and his books are still the funniest, truest, craziest, most heartfelt books I’ve come across. Plus he makes physics jokes. But that’s the best I can do on the subject of favourite books.

    • I’m so sorry for my delayed reply! This has been an incredibly hectic week for some reason. But, I really appreciate that you took the time to answer my questions! And, I really get it about not wanting to do award posts, anymore. I really had a hard time writing my Liebster one even though it was just answering questions. It didn’t come out the way I would have liked. Anyway, I’m so sorry about your Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia. My mom has the latter, and I know that it really impacts her life on quite a few levels. Dealing with both must be tougher than anyone but you you can understand. But, I really admire your attitude, though. And, it’s so impressive what you’ve done with your blog. I think your goals are right on! I smiled about your tendency to swear in real life but not in writing. I actually get that! I’ve sworn a few times in my posts and it didn’t feel right, for some reason. I’m not sure why. Anyway, I must admit I’ve not yet read anything by Terry Pratchett! So, I’m on it! And, I’m going to check out the posts you mentioned for favorite/least favorite. Glad we’ve connected in this blog world, and sorry again for my late reply!

      • Don’t worry about the delayed reply (I wouldn’t even call it late). Sometimes I don’t reply to comments for a week or so just because things are getting on top of me. Or sometimes just because I’m lazy.

Thank you. I’m not so convinced my attitude is admirable. I can definitely be a bit sulky about it sometimes.

If you’re serious about reading Terry Pratchett, I recommend going with a Discworld book, but not doing them in order (they’re mostly stand-alones in a common universe, so you really don’t have to). Some of my picks would be Guards! Guards!, Going Postal, Monstrous Regiment or maybe Hogfather.

      • I think all of us can be sulky about things from time to time. You’re not alone in that! As for Terry Pratchett, thanks for the recommendations! I’m definitely serious about checking out your picks. I have a Barnes and Nobles gift card that I’ve been sitting on since Christmas, and I think it’s time to put in an order! 🙂 It’s taking me so long to get through books these days, just because of the baby. I’m still reading one that I started at least a month ago. My baby’s sleep schedule has been a bit all over the place, lately, so when she sleeps–I tend to do the same thing. Then there are days like today where she randomly takes a 2.5 hour nap (!!) Anyway, thanks again for answering my questions and for the recommendations!
